Mekonomen to launch “Share Car” concept

15 April 2015 14:52

The new Mekonomen Share Car service is being launched together with Greyfell Nordic AS, franchisee to the world’s largest car leasing company, Enterprise Rent-A-Car of the US. The Mekonomen Share Car concept entails that two or more individuals are able to share the same vehicle and thus reduce their costs. The intended target group includes private individuals and companies.

The trend comes from the US market where the concept has made the most progress. The Share Car service is being launched as an alternative to today’s way of owning a vehicle. A pilot project will be initiated during Q3, 2015 in which car owners in Stockholm will have the opportunity to share a vehicle with friends, neighbours or colleagues.

“We note that our customers are largely requesting alternative ways to gain access to a vehicle, particularly in larger cities,” says Marcus Larsson, Executive Vice President, Mekonomen Group. “By entering a collaboration with Enterprise, we will capitalise on the company’s experience and expertise in Car Sharing and be able to launch the new Mekonomen Share Car concept already in the autumn, with the aim of making CarLife easier for our customers.”

Mekonomen Share Car is focusing on a broad target group with varying needs. A private individual who only uses a vehicle occasionally does not have to defray the entire cost of the vehicle. Families with children who already have a vehicle can cost-efficiently gain access to another vehicle together with friends or the neighbouring family. The person who wishes to drive a more expensive vehicle has the opportunity to do so at the same cost as today or even at a lower cost.

“Our knowledge of Car Share in the US and UK markets together with Mekonomen’s strong position in the market gives us an excellent starting point for launching the alternative to owning a vehicle,” says Morten von Krogh, President of Greyfell Nordic AS. “There are major opportunities for the Mekonomen Share Car concept and we are now preparing a business model that will be tested as a pilot in Stockholm within a few months.”
