The EU commission intends to removes the ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, and this affects millions of people who drive, repair and maintain vehicles. However, it does not change the long term journey toward more sustainable mobility.
On 16 December 2025, the decision came from the European Commission. There will be no strict ban on the sale of new fossil fuel vehicles from 2035.
The background is well known. The transport sector must significantly reduce emissions for the EU to reach its climate targets. The Commission has previously pushed for a ban from 2035, but several major member states and industry representatives have warned that a strict technology ban risks having a negative impact on both competitiveness and consumers, especially in countries where electrification is progressing more slowly and infrastructure is less developed.
The European Commission’s new approach means that electric vehicles will continue to play a central role in this transition. At the same time, it also means that other types of technologies may have room during the transition period.
In short, electric, hybrid, petrol and diesel vehicles will continue to coexist, while new technologies continue to develop.
