Mobility Barometer 2023

Understanding mobility in the Nordics

The Mobility Barometer 2023 aims to answer important questions about mobility in the Nordic countries: Why do people need to travel from point A to point B? Who travels the most? How mobile are people, and what modes of transportation do they use? Before diving into the specifics, the report first outlines the overall mobility trends across Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway.

Guided by these insights, the Mobility Barometer provides a comprehensive look at how and why people in the Nordics choose to be mobile. The car remains the dominant mode of transportation, but economic conditions play a significant role in mobility choices. While electric cars continue to grow in popularity, their adoption tends to slow down during tougher economic times. Overall, cars still align closely with the preferences and needs of Nordic travelers.

Increasing the lead – into the future of mobility

Words from the CEO

The need for mobility is timeless—regardless of how we choose to get around. With the insights and data from the Mobility Barometer, we have a comprehensive understanding of how people think and feel about mobility, and how they prefer to travel. Among bikes, motorcycles, electric scooters, public transportation, and cars, one mode of transportation clearly stands out.

Last year, we concluded that the car is king. This year’s Mobility Barometer confirms that the car has only strengthened its position. Today, we say "electric car", but in the future, we might simply say "car."

People are generally more open to electric cars; it’s the surrounding conditions that create hesitation. Still, the number of electric vehicles continues to rise, and more people — especially in larger cities, are becoming electric car owners.

The electric vehicle industry is growing rapidly and evolving to meet consumer demands. Leading automotive companies are shifting their focus toward electrification, and new players are entering the market. Consumers want electric cars to be more sustainable, affordable, and safe.

The green transition and a more sustainable future
Armed with insights from the Mobility Barometer, we at MEKO continue to evolve —developing new services and products to meet the needs of the future. While it's difficult to predict exactly what car ownership will look like down the road, one thing is certain: MEKO’s mission remains the same — to enable safe and sustainable mobility for all. And according to the barometer, most of us will be driving into the future —no matter the fuel type.

Enjoy!

Facts about the survey 2023

The Mobility Barometer explores mobility patterns in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway. It provides an overview of how and why people choose to travel, the factors behind their decisions, and their preferences for personal transportation.

The report has three sections. The first covers broad mobility trends in the Nordics, including the Mobility Indicator, which compares how people travel now with how they wish to travel. The second section examines specific transportation modes, focusing especially on the car. The final section looks ahead to the green transition, exploring attitudes toward electric cars, car-sharing, vehicle maintenance, and emerging trends shaping the future of mobility.

The survey was conducted online with randomly selected respondents aged 18 and older, between January 16 and 22, 2023. In each country, more than 1,000 people completed the survey, with the total number of respondents exceeding 4,000.
