The future of smarter and faster car repairs

Imagine your car breaks down and is brought to the workshop because it won’t start. After initial troubleshooting, technicians discover an issue that can't be solved with a standard diagnostic tool. Instead of towing the car to an original equipment (OE) workshop, the workshop connects with Remote diagnostics. MEKO’s expert technicians, utilizing OE-level diagnostic tools, resolve the issue remotely, saving time, costs, and eliminating the need for the car to be towed.

The future of smarter and faster car repairs

“This is the power of remote diagnostics—a tool that allows workshops to identify car issues and find solutions in real time. It benefits both mechanics and car owners by saving time, reducing costs, and increasing customer satisfaction,” says Andreas Forslund, Solutions Manager at MEKO, who shares more about the opportunities and technology behind it. Remote diagnostics is designed to maximize efficiency, regardless of the vehicle's fuel type or engine model. With several years of experience, MEKO has conducted extensive testing of the tool, which is already available at over 100 workshops in Sweden.

In 2025, the solution will expand to Poland, starting with ten selected workshops to refine routines before scaling up. Beyond improving efficiency, reducing costs, and increasing customer satisfaction, it also enables knowledge sharing across borders within MEKO.

“This technology is a game-changer for independent workshops, helping them compete with brand-authorized service centers by improving access to manufacturer data and reducing manual troubleshooting time. Many car owners live far from authorized workshops, which are often concentrated in larger cities. Remote diagnostics bridges this gap by making original manufacturer diagnostics available to any workshop, ensuring faster problem resolution,” says Andreas Forslund, Solutions Manager at MEKO.

Key areas where remote diagnostics are most useful:

        • Calibration of front and rear cameras, radar, and sensor systems
        • Service reset, including Secure Gateway and SERMI-enabled vehicles
        • Programming of keys and remote controls
        • Coding, resetting, and unlocking of new control modules (e.g., steering, transmission, headlights)
        • Coding accessories and functions, such as tow bars
        • Storing maintenance history in the vehicle’s multimedia system
        • Resetting AdBlue warnings
        • Reading and clearing fault codes on new models not yet covered by existing diagnostic equipment

As the number of car brands increases, general diagnostic technology is not evolving quickly enough for all manufacturers - especially for newer Asian brands. Remote diagnostics helps workshops stay ahead by providing vehicle technicians with expert knowledge, allowing them to specialize in unlimited vehicle technology and connect with other automotive experts.

“If they encounter a vehicle outside their expertise, they can consult colleagues within the MEKO network for support, whether locally or across borders,” says Andreas Forslund.

With electric vehicles gaining market share, workshop visits will decrease since EVs don’t require service as often, making it crucial to accept and complete all available jobs. While some busy workshops may currently afford to turn down work, this will likely change over time.

Remote diagnostics is a valuable tool for any workshop, regardless of location. As the industry evolves, embracing this technology will be key to staying competitive and delivering top-tier service to customers.

“It is a major and important transition that must be carried out carefully yet swiftly. The experience has been very positive, with virtually no limitations on what can be done,” finish Andreas Forslund, Solutions Manager at MEKO.

Top 5 ways remote diagnostics make life easier for car owners and workshops:

        1. Faster fixes, less hassle
Imagine your car warning you about a problem, and without further due the mechanic know what's wrong. Remote diagnostics let workshops check issues in real time, so you spend less time waiting and more time driving.

        2. Saves you money
Not every dashboard warning light signals an expensive repair. Remote diagnostics help separate minor issues from major ones, saving you unnecessary trips to the workshop and cutting down on repair costs.

        3. Keeps you safer on the road
If something serious is about to go wrong—like brake failure or a dying battery—your car can send alerts before it becomes dangerous. That means fewer surprises and a safer drive for you and your passengers.

        4. A game changer for fleets
If you run a business with multiple vehicles, remote diagnostics help track their health, ensuring timely maintenance, reducing breakdowns, and keeping operations running smoothly.

        5. Smarter warranty and recall support
No more guesswork with recalls or warranty issues. Automakers can remotely check if a problem exists, speeding up repairs and avoiding unnecessary trips to the dealership.
